I know I’m a few years late to the party on American Psycho, but I finally watched it today and wow have I been missing out. Not only is Christian Bale’s acting excellent in this movie, and I have a few not-so-nice guesses as to why, but the whole movie just completely messes with your brain. I don’t really want to give away any spoilers, though if you haven’t seen it by now…. follow my lead and watch it.
The one thing that kind of threw me off was whether or not his talking about music in some a conceptual way was some strange kind of prelude to his killing someone, as every time he started off on some diatribe about a band or song I’d become tense with the anticipation of his next kill, or if it was just what he did to show off his intelligence and to pretend like he had a much deeper side to him than the petty, greedy psychopath that was starting to try and swallow him whole. I’d like to hear if anyone else thought the same thing about these parts of the scenes.
My guess as to why Bale’s acting was so on key was that it’s been a few years now since this movie came out and we’ve read or seen the way he behaves, or how he reacts to things, and with that knowledge this character’s rage and occasionally his attitude seem to be a little too easily in his range of emotions, that is not saying he is a psycho or anything, he just has angry issues as has been proven in the public spotlight.
Anyway, yes I’m a few years late, but I’m here now and if you haven’t seen American Psycho yet, go rent it, it’s a fantastic mind f of a thriller.
